Here at East West Fertility, we treat female infertility, as well as male infertility. When most people think of infertility, they believe it’s a female specific problem. This isn’t true. Couples who suffer from infertility know that it could be either the male or the female with the problem. Male fertility can be affected by Male Factor Infertility, which manifests as low sperm count, low sperm motility, and poor sperm morphology. We have specific treatment methods for each gender. Our complementary medicine and fertility techniques will provide you with a natural way to become fertile. If keeping the journey from conception to the birthing process as natural as possible is important to you, East West Fertility can help you on your road to natural fertility.

Reproductive and other health services offered include:

Female infertility, Male infertility, IVF support, Pre-Conception care, Pregnancy care, Labour preparation, Post-partum care, Women’s Health and Massage.

Female Infertility

Female Infertility

Fertility requires balanced hormones, structurally sound reproductive organs, good health and a nutritious diet. Even so, the chances of a healthy couple conceiving each month is just 25%. Chinese medicine views fertility as a balanced reproductive system that produces fluctuations in the Yin and Yang. For the reproductive system to function at its peak there must also be balance in all body systems.

A couple is considered infertile if after one year of having unprotected sex they have not conceived. Infertility is an increasing problem, particularly in Australia where one in six couples is diagnosed as infertile. In about 10% of cases, the exact reason is unknown. In other cases, either the female or the male has a reproductive problem, or both partners are infertile.

From a Chinese medicine perspective infertility is a manifestation of reproductive imbalance coupled with impaired general health and wellbeing.

The Female Infertility Program uses acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and nutritional therapies to promote fertility, improve general health, and support the possibility of conceiving a healthy baby. This treatment approach is also used for the general Pre-Conception Care program. I understand Pre-Conception Care is necessary when planning a pregnancy because a woman needs to be healthy to produce good quality eggs. The health of the reproductive system is assessed through general health symptoms and charting the various changes throughout the menstrual cycle.

I treat a range of women’s health disorders that cause infertility such as:

  • Anovulation (no ovulation)
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Amenorrhea (no periods)
  • Fibroids
  • Luteal phase insufficiency
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Endometrial lining problems
  • Implantation disorders
  • Impaired oestrogen metabolism
  • Sperm antibodies (hostile cervix)
  • Acquired ovarian failure (for example, as a result of chemotherapy)
  • Early menopause
  • Overweight
  • Aging

For many women, maintaining the Infertility Program for at least four (4) months is sufficient to improve fertility markers and increase the chances of conceiving. If other reproductive therapies, such as IVF, are required the program can be an adjunct therapy to promote health and wellbeing, relieve stress and support the possibility of a positive outcome.

I also treat frequent miscarriage or problem pregnancies as well as addressing the stress known to occur when coping with a shattering diagnosis of infertility. Studies by Chen, Dong and Luo et al have shown that acupuncture relieves stress. The relationship between stress and infertility is thought to be through the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (HPA), which plays a significant role in fertility. The axis regulates both our sex hormones and our stress responses, which suggests stress contributes to a range of fertility disorders such as amenorrhea, anovulation, ovulatory disorders and irregular periods.

Women’s Health

Women’s Health

I treat many women’s and men’s health disorders that can occur throughout life using acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and nutritional therapies to regulate male and female hormones and allow the body to correct imbalance. According to traditional theory and promising research, Chinese Medicine is a safe and effective therapy for women’s health and men’s health.

Chinese Medicine (CM) has been used to correct gynaecological imbalances for thousands of years. The earliest record of a CM gynaecological text is dated at around 5th century BC. Contemporary CM practitioners have inherited detailed documentation of the development and treatment of women’s health disorders. The treatment strategies and formulas used centuries ago by renowned CM gynaecologists are still used effectively today. Clinical evidence supports the use of CM for women’s health. Research into CM gynaecology is a relatively new field, however some favourable studies have demonstrated its therapeutic role in gynaecology for conditions like period pain, PMS, amenorrhea (no periods) and infertility.

CM views women’s health as a delicate interaction of balance and fluctuation between Yin and Yang, coupled with harmony in both the internal organs and reproductive channels. The fluctuation of Yin and Yang is a twofold process which happens cyclically throughout the month and also throughout the different life phases a woman passes through: puberty, pregnancy, motherhood, menopause, and beyond. Certain factors can easily upset the delicate balance and lead to gynaecological disorders. Environment, diet, emotions, lifestyle and age are just some of the things that can dramatically affect the fluctuations of Yin and Yang. This is because a woman’s health is underpinned by hormonal changes, and menstruation at certain phases in her life.

That is why the menstruation reveals much about a woman’s health in her reproductive years. The menstruation and a woman’s life phase give important diagnostic information about how to best address her health needs, including changing nutritional needs.

I treat a range of disorders from menstrual irregularities in puberty to menopausal problems at the end of a woman’s reproductive life. The following is a list of some of the conditions she has helped:

  • Early, late or irregular periods
  • Heavy periods
  • Scanty periods
  • No periods
  • Painful periods
  • Pre-menstrual Syndrome (PMS)
  • Skin problems
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Fibroids
  • Cervical disorders
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Recurrent cystitis
  • Candida
  • Prolapsed uterus
  • Fibrocystic / lumpy breasts
  • Mood disorders
  • Menopausal Syndrome
  • Infertility

IVF Support

Research has shown that receiving acupuncture while undergoing assisted reproduction has positive benefits. Studies show that when acupuncture is combined with In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) there can be a 50% increase in pregnancy rates in women of all ages. This is highly encouraging considering that in Australia the one percent of births involving the use of ART are given on average only a 20% chance of conceiving in an IVF cycle. Additional benefits of acupuncture that have been reported include reducing the potentially considerable side-effects associated with the fertility drugs required in assisted reproduction, and importantly, decreasing the chance of miscarriage.

Chinese Medicine

Chinese Medicine

Chinese Medicine (CM), commonly referred to as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used for thousands of years to promote health and prevent disease. This includes the promotion of reproductive and sexual health and treatment of female health disorders, male health disorders and infertility.

The basic philosophy of Chinese medicine is founded on the dual concepts of Yin and Yang and energetic balance and imbalance. When Yin and Yang are balanced the energies are dynamically stable and all our body systems function well.

Chinese medicine uses diagnostic methods to assess the state of the Yin and Yang and determine the nature and location of the energetic imbalance. These diagnostic methods include feeling the pulse, palpating the abdomen, looking at the tongue and asking detailed questions.

I use these traditional diagnostic methods in combination with modern reproductive approaches such as charting the menstrual cycle, using ovulation kits and employing blood and ultrasound investigations to assess reproductive health. abdomen, looking at the tongue and asking detailed questions.

Chinese Medicine uses several therapies to address imbalance. The main therapies we use are:

  • Acupuncture
  • Chinese Herbal Medicine
  • Moxibustion
  • Dietary Therapy
  • Massage
